LD 42 doorbelling

WEA members across the state are speaking out for our students in this fall’s election by working to elect pro-public education, pro-union candidates. More than 40 WEA Fourth Corner Uniserv Council members led the way this weekend, doorbelling to support Sharon Shewmake, Alicia Rule, Joe Timmons, and Congressmember Rick Larsen.

Rep. Sharon Shewmake, a WEA member who is running for the state senate in the 42nd LD, described the event as the largest of her campaign season so far and said it sent message about the power of belonging to a union like WEA.

“I’m so excited to have a bunch of educators – teachers, bus drivers, nutrition services, everyone-- go out and tell the people of this community how much their vote matters, what their vote means, and for them to be supportive of these incredible candidates,” Rep. Shewmake shared.

“The last few years have been really hard,” said Elliott Sherburne, 8th grade US History teacher and member of Sedro-Woolley EA. "It was amazing to be able to get together with some of our elected officials, have lunch with them, talk face-to-face about what’s happening at my school, and then spend time with other WEA members.  I really feel like we were making a huge difference for our students.”

Congressmember Larsen thanked WEA members for taking action and encouraged us to spread the message to family and friends that voting this year is more important than ever.  “The stakes really are that high this year,” noted Congressmember Larsen.

“I had so much fun at this event,” Sherburne remarked.  “I had the opportunity to discuss Senate candidate Sharon Shewmake’s views and priorities on education and then I went doorbelling on a beautiful day with a WEA retired member that I met at lunch that day. We were able to share with community members why educators are supporting these candidates. I would encourage every WEA member to come out and join us next time!”

WEA activists are scheduling more doorbelling events across the state leading up to the November 8 voting deadline.  Sign up here to learn more about what’s happening in your area.
