Who we are

Welcome to the Washington Education Association.

We are the teachers who help children learn to read, write and think. We are the school secretaries who answer questions, loan children lunch money, call their parents if they are sick, and keep your school running smoothly. We are the counselors who help students solve problems, find their path into life and make the leap to college, vocational classes and careers. We are the special education professionals who provide services for children with special needs and the nurses who help care for all of our children. We are the school employees who drive the children to and from school, keep the grounds clean and safe, provide healthy meals and support our students and teachers in and out of the classroom.

We are the coaches, musicians and artists who teach children to shoot a basketball, play a trumpet, sing a song and draw a picture. We are the library and technology specialists who open the doors to a world of information. We are the professionals to whom our community entrusts its children every school day. We nurture minds and bodies so they grow to be productive contributors in our changing society. We are people who care about our students, schools, public education and each other.

We are working together to improve education in Washington state. We are the Washington Education Association.

WEA is the state's largest public employee union, along with being the dominant professional union for Washington's public school employees. WEA leaders and staff work passionately to attract and retain great teachers and support employees, to strengthen the profession, to shape education policy and to provide a unified voice in support of stronger schools.

The mission of the Washington Education Association is to advance the professional interests of its members in order to make public education the best it can be for students, staff and communities.

Our goal is to build confidence in public education and increase support for Washington's public school system.

WEA works to increase WEA members' professional status and job satisfaction, improve the quality of and access to public education for all students, and to forge partnerships with parents, business, other unions and community groups.
