2010 WEA Awards Programs

'A Teacher to Remember' essay contest
With almost 1,200 entries in the 17th annual student essay contest, it was another smashing success. Many, many wonderful essays were submitted. Winners each received a pizza party for his/her class, plus $150 gift certificate to Amazon.com.

Grades 3-5
5th-grader Lauren Peterson, Edmonds Elementary, honoring her second- and fourth-grade teacher, Christy Diefendorf. Read Lauren's essay.

Grades 6-8
7th-grader Cassie Engvall, Hidden River Middle School in Snohomish (Monroe School District), honoring her former teacher, Heather Harrington. Read Cassie's essay.

Grades 9-12
12th-grader Kenny Krotzer, Auburn-Riverside High School, honoring his physics teacher Ernest Zeiger. Read Kenny's essay.

ESL/ELL
4th-grader Mario Gonzalez, White Salmon Elementary, honoring his former teacher, Tara Peyralans. Read Mario's essay.

Several students around the state received a Runner-Up certificate along with a $25 gift card to Amazon.com. No overall winner was awarded in the multimedia category.

Human & Civil Rights awards
Awards were given in four categories:

Community Service
KuUmba Drum Group, Cooper Elementary School, Spokane; directed by Peggy Gretsch and David Casteal

Student Involvement
Pizza Klatch, in support of GLBTQ Youth, North Thurston and Olympia School Districts

Cultural Awareness
"New Phase, New Ways" program bridging cultural gaps at Central Kitsap High School, directed by Beth Blandin and J.D. Sweet

International Peace and Understanding
Mariachi Heunachi music program at Wenatchee High School, directed by Ramon Rivera

ESP of the Year
