Background
The Washington Education Association is a membership organization comprising more than 83,000 elementary and secondary teachers, higher education faculty and staff, educational support professionals, retired educators and college students preparing to become teachers.
We help build strong local associations that negotiate for members across Washington state, lobby policymakers to ensure excellence and equity in our public schools, work to elect legislative candidates who are pro-public-education, offer professional development classes and resources to our members, and ensure due process for education employees. WEA has 370 local affiliates.
The WEA is a member-governed labor union. WEA policy is determined democratically by the WEA Representative Assembly, the Association's supreme policy-making body. The Representative Assembly, which meets each spring, is composed of nearly 1,000 members elected by members through their local associations. The WEA Board of Directors also sets policy and provides direction for the WEA. Leader bios and pictures.
The WEA is Washington's statewide arm of the National Education Association. The NEA is America's oldest and largest organization dedicated to advancing the cause of public education. Founded in 1857, today the NEA proudly claims 3.2 million members who work at every level of education, from pre-schools to universities. NEA has affiliates in all states.
The WEA staff work in our headquarters office in Federal Way and in 22 regional UniServ councils.
The WEA has a long history of working on behalf of education professionals in Washington. Only public education employees are eligible to be WEA Active Members.
