BrieflyFall bargaining conference Whether you've been at the bargaining table for years or just a newcomer with a keen interest in collective bargaining, WEA's second annual Collective Bargaining Conference will have something for you. The conference, scheduled for Oct. 26-27 at the Doubletree Inn at SeaTac, promises to be informative, interesting, motivational and, of course, fun. Local leaders, bargaining teams and anyone interested in learning more about bargaining are invited to attend. Participants will self-select three breakout sessions. More information and registration will come in September. Educational employee mediation training offered in July The Dispute Resolution Center of Snohomish and Island counties and Antioch University will present conflict resolution/mediation training for educators on July 9-13. The training is designed to provide teachers and educational support professionals with techniques to resolve disputes before they escalate. Topics include building communication skills; boosting confidence and strengthening advocacy ability. Clock hours are available. For more information or to register, e-mail Matt Phillips or call 425-339-1335, Ext. 2325. Free professional development and travel Toyota will offer study visits to Japan, the Galapagos Islands and Costa Rica to full-time teachers (grades 7-12, all subjects) in the 2007-08 school year. Each program will offer country-specific themes to help educators expand their professional skills, increase cultural awareness and enhance their understanding of environmental issues around the world. Application is online. Deadline is Sept. 7. Science teachers pursuing national certification Teachers seeking national board certification beginning in 2007-08 in either Early Adolescence/Science or Adolescence and Young Adulthood/Science may be eligible for financial assistance from the GlaxoSmithKline Endowed Scholarship Fund. Eligibility is limited to first-time candidates seeking national certification. More details are available online. Scholarships will be awarded in late 2007. Free Rick Steves' travel books Last year's travel books by popular local tour guide Rick Steves are available. Copies of the 2006 Rick Steves' "Europe Through the Back Door" books, as well as maps of Spain/Portugal and "Mona Winks," the fifth edition of Steves' guide to Europe's top museums, are free. The books are "outdated" in that none of the museums' specifics, such as costs, hours, etc., have been updated. In most cases, the art hasn't changed, and there are black-and-white photos of many paintings as well as descriptions. The materials are free and cannot be resold. Books can be picked up at the company's Edmonds office or shipped to schools for a nominal fee. For more information about the books and maps, visit the Rick Steves Europe Web site. Share
