Charter school lawsuit moving forward

A King County Superior Court judge recently took action on the latest lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of charter schools in Washington.

Here’s what’s important to know about the case:

The legal complaint against charter schools is moving forward, and WEA is still one of the plaintiffs. The main constitutional argument that charter schools are not common schools under our state constitution still stands. The next court hearing is scheduled for Jan. 27.

The charter school law the Washington Legislature approved earlier this year diverts public funding to privately run schools that are not accountable to the public. The Washington Supreme Court struck down a similar law in 2015.
