Gov. Jay Inslee will be releasing his state budget proposal soon, and WEA members are urging him to fund additional counselors, psychologists, nurses, therapists and other mental health services for all students in every school, including community and technical colleges.

Email Gov. Inslee and urge him to fund these important positions in his state budget proposal, which he will release in December. School safety is one of the top legislative priorities the WEA Board of Directors adopted for the upcoming 2019 legislative session. Here is the complete list of WEA’s 2019 Legislative Priorities.

WEA members and students identified school safety needs in a series of meetings WEA President Kim Mead and the Governor convened earlier this year. Here is a summary of the student health and school safety needs and priorities they identified.

WEA’s legislative goals also include restoring much-needed levy flexibility to allow school districts to meet the unique needs of their students beyond state-funded basic education. We know from experience that local decision making is the best way to support students.

Other WEA priorities include strengthening financial security for retired educators and increasing state funding for higher education salaries.

Inslee’s budget likely will include full funding for the new statewide health care system for educators, another WEA legislative priority. If it’s implemented at the funding level we negotiated with Inslee’s office, the new system would reduce insurance premium costs for many educators, especially those with dependents.
