WEA members protest the Trump-DeVos agenda
DeVos is widely considered the most unqualified secretary of education ever. A billionaire, DeVos has spent hundreds of millions of dollars promoting the privatization of public schools and an anti-worker agenda.
Dozens of groups sponsored the anti-DeVos protest, including WEA, several locals and Washington BATs. WEA Board members Shannon McCann from Federal Way and Justin Fox-Bailey from Snohomish were speakers at the Bellevue rally.
“Betsy DeVos could have come here to visit, to learn from, our outstanding and innovative public schools - a chance to see firsthand our educators’ dedication and commitment to the success of their students,” Fox-Bailey told the crowd. “But Secretary DeVos is not here to visit schools or to learn from educators or to support our students. She is here for the purely political purpose of raising money for the Washington Policy Center, the local franchise of the anti-worker, anti-union, right-wing national network. As a billionaire she is coming to celebrate with millionaires to congratulate each other and contribute to maintaining a system that is clearly working for them.”
