Job Description – Communications - Digital Content Specialist - Level V

Supervision: The successful applicant will function as a member of the Communications Department of the Washington Education Association and will report to the Communications Director.

Location:  WEA is located at 32032 Weyerhaeuser Way S, Federal Way, Washington.

Job summary: WEA is seeking a dynamic communications professional who can apply a strategic communications approach across the association’s digital channels to achieve organizational goals in a fast-paced, quick-changing environment. The successful candidate will be equally adept at managing projects, vendor relationships, working smoothly within a team, as well as working independently to drive all aspects of digital content creation and production to completion.   

Job responsibilities and essential functions

  • Respect diversity, equity and full inclusion in employment and governance within WEA
  • Oversee day-to-day management of the association’s social media channels and website, consistent with WEA branding and strategic initiatives, and in coordination with print materials
  • Act as clearing house for digital content created by the Communications department, managing the content calendar to ensure stories and posts meet department standards and are in line with WEA strategic goals
  • Produce excellent writing for social, web and magazine channels; must have the ability to develop content from concept and reporting to final production
  • Create a variety of compelling paid and organic content, including photos, videos, graphics and copy for WEA digital properties - differentiated by channel
  • Target paid ads to reach specific audiences relative to topic or issues
  • Use social media and web for online organizing purposes that support offline organizing efforts
  • Employ online community management techniques to build and manage thriving communities and enforce standards to maintain positive discussion and debate  
  • Grow channels by expanding subscribers, audience reach and user engagement
  • Create a regular metrics report which highlights actionable insights for all digital channels and campaigns and is aligned with strategic goals
  • Monitor social media trends and make recommendations on channels and platforms to reach our intended audiences
  • Create graphics, memes, gifs to support social media posts
  • Provide training and support to colleagues and members on topics such as writing for the web, web production and content management systems - communicating the use of social media and other electronic media as required
  • Manage relationships with third-party vendors - driving projects to completion and launching web site improvements
  • Use project management skills necessary to manage tasks from scoping and development through implementation
  • Use creative problem solving to keep projects moving forward and provide stakeholders with solutions when faced with obstacles
  • Experience tracking and meeting deadlines; position requires the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced working environment with competing demands
  • Work effectively as a team with other staff in carrying out the assigned responsibilities
  • Ability to work in a self-directed and efficient manner, maintaining calm under pressure
  • Commitment to the societal, civic, and cultural importance of public education
  • Ability to support department priorities (as necessary), including member communications, local education associations’ bargains and emerging issues

Desired qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a track record of:

  • Successfully managing and growing branded accounts on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and other digital channels in service of organizational goals
  • Managing and growing online communities
  • Monitoring digital trends and identifying new tools and opportunities
  • Researching audiences and developing communication strategies that resonate and move targets to action
  • Mastering content management systems for web and email - with the ability to adjust to the latest SEO trends
  • Creating and successfully enforcing voice and brand standards across a team
  • Measuring and reporting effectiveness of digital campaigns and adjusting as needed to ensure goals are achieved
  • Training other team members and stakeholders on new technologies and processes
  • Developing long-term plans and goals in support of organizational goals
  • Using CRMs to create target lists and track results
  • Fluency in a language in addition to English

Minimum job requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or a closely related field - or four to six years of directly relevant work experience
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience working with social media, content management, graphics design in a similar capacity
  • Knowledge and experience in strategic communications planning 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and proficiency with digital and desktop publishing programs such as Creative Suite and/or other similar software platforms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of HTML 5, SEO, content management software (such as Gearbox, Word Press, Salsa)
  • Proficiency in Office 365  
  • Ability to travel both in and outside the State of Washington
  • Ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver's license, possess a satisfactory driving record, and have a dependable automobile for Association travel; proof of automobile insurance with liability limits of at least $100,000/$300,000 required
  • Willingness to take temporary assignments in other state locations as required by the work

Salary range and benefits

Annual salary range: $106,120 to $151,368 (Level V)
