Job description - Member Engagement Communications and Systems Specialist
Supervision: The successful applicant will function as a member of the Communications Department of the Washington Education Association and will report to the Communications Director.
Location: WEA Headquarters - located at 32032 Weyerhaeuser Way S, Federal Way, Washington.
Job summary: This position will be responsible for continued adaption of a Salesforce-based membership data and information system across WEA, including training and technical capabilities. The successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communications skills, be able to lead organizational change, and have the technical expertise to operate Salesforce and train others in its use. They will work closely with other staff who have data-related responsibilities, requiring close coordination and collaboration in the event of competing priorities. Though technical expertise is a necessary requirement of this position, much of the work will focus on the human element of change management and training. WEA’s version of Salesforce is called NEA360 and is a customized version of the platform created for the National Education Association and its state affiliates.
Job responsibilities and essential functions
- Respect diversity, equity and inclusion in employment and governance within WEA
- Lead organizational change efforts to support membership growth and retention, by successfully advocating to co-workers and union leaders the benefits of using data to achieve organizational goals and priorities
- Proficiency in Salesforce, including data entry, distinguishing record types, building reports and dashboards, creating automated processes, and tracking and recording activities
- Knowledge of third-party applications to increase functionality of data input and presentation, including programs to make forms or present findings
- Create and deliver onboarding training for new hires and leaders
- Continue training and adoption for staff and leaders for beginning, intermediate and advanced users
- Support existing NEA360 processes and identify new opportunities to use Salesforce to advance organizational goals
- Identify opportunities to integrate other systems such as email or event registrations, with Salesforce
- Document business processes where NEA360 can be used to streamline work
- Establish, track and assess metrics (data) related to organizing goals
- Coordinate closely with staff in Membership, Communications, Advocacy and Organizing, Public Policy/Governmental Relations, Professional Practice, and Information Technology
- Work productively with elected union leadership and management staff
- Effectively communicate verbally, and in writing, to large and small groups, and in formal and informal settings
- Work in a self-directed and efficient manner, maintaining calm under pressure
- Possess an understanding and appreciation for the societal, civic, and cultural importance of public education
- As a member of the Communications team, be able to support, as needed, department priorities, including member communications, local education associations’ bargains and emerging issues.

- Forging partnerships with parents, businesses, other unions, and community groups

- Increasing the participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups in all aspects of WEA activities
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred job requirements
- Bachelor’s degree and two to three years' experience working with membership data systems, or four to six years of experience working with data systems
- Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change
- Knowledge of membership retention practices, member organizing, public education
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including but not limited to, Word and Power Point
- Experience working in a union setting, non-profit organization or educational setting
- Ability to travel both in and outside the state of Washington
- Ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license, possess a satisfactory driving record, and have a dependable automobile for Association travel. Proof of automobile insurance with liability limits of at least $100,000/$300,000 required
- Willingness to take temporary assignments in other state locations as required
Salary range and benefits
Annual salary range: $106,120 to $151,368 (effective September 1, 2019)
