Job Description - Political Organizer - Governmental Relations

Supervision:  The Political Organizer will work within the Public Policy Center and will report to the Director of Governmental Relations.

Location:  Washington Education Association’s headquarters office in Federal Way, Washington

Essential job functions and responsibilities

  • Develop, recommend, and implement strategies for a political organizing and advocacy program to elect pro-education, pro-labor candidates to public office at the state and local level to advance the mission and goals of the WEA
  • Proactively monitor the political environment to identify opportunities to improve WEA’s position on priority issues; provide information and analyses to internal stakeholders to facilitate strategic and tactical planning
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a process to organize and engage members in significant public policy issues in coordination with other WEA staff and leaders
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with key elected and appointed officials
  • Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with other key education and labor stakeholders and organizations within the political environment
  • Provide appropriate training and skill development for staff, leaders and members to increase WEA’s involvement in the electoral and legislative arenas
  • Provide guidance to staff and leaders regarding rules and regulations concerning political operations in consultation with WEA’s General Counsel’s office
  • Respond to member requests regarding WEA-PAC and political issues
  • Support the mission of the WEA-PAC through education, engagement, and fundraising activities; work with members of the PAC board, WEA leadership and WEA staff
  • Lead political organizing and implement election strategies in both coordinated and independent expenditure efforts
  • Assist and participate in national, state, and local labor actions as necessary
  • Support the WEA goals to eradicate racism and inequality
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum job requirements

  • BA/BS Degree or equivalent
  • Experience in organizing individuals/groups for political and legislative issues
  • Experience working on campaigns and elections at the legislative, state or national levels, including voter targeting, volunteer recruitment, fundraising, media, messaging and research
  • Experience and training on digital organizing strategies and tactics
  • Experience in developing and providing training to diverse groups on complex, emotional and highly regulated issues
  • Experience working with large member organizations
  • Detailed understanding of Washington’s electoral and legislative systems at the local, state and federal levels
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; excellent presentation skills required
  • Ability to effectively present and persuasively deliver the WEA message
  • Possess the ability to work effectively in a team environment with other Public Policy members, Association staff, members and governance
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate individuals and teams
  • High energy and willingness to work flexible hours, including additional hours during each campaign season
  • Computer experience/skills, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet, etc.
  • The ability to obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license, possess a satisfactory driving record, and have a dependable automobile for Association travel - with insurance limits of at least $100,000/$300,000 required
  • Support and advance the Washington Education Association mission, goal, objectives and priorities

Preferred job requirements

  • Experience in local, state and/or national employee or political organizations dependent upon volunteer membership
  • Experience supporting labor actions and strikes
  • Prior membership in a union and/or understanding of union history and values

Salary range and benefits

Annual salary range:  Level V – $106,120 to $151,368
