We delivered nearly 1,000 free books to students for Read Across America Day
Students throughout the Puget Sound area were the happy recipients of nearly 1,000 free books this morning. WEA President Kim Mead, WEA Vice President Stephen Miller and some 30 Washington Education Association staff members delivered the books to celebrate Read Across America Day.
WEA purchased the books with the help of a National Education Association Read Across America grant designed to provide books for schools serving economically disadvantaged students. Most of the books will go home with the students, and each teacher also received a few books for his or her classroom.
Students in K-3 classes received a shipment of books based on what their teachers requested. Books were delivered to WEA members in Puyallup, Tacoma, Highline, Seattle, Federal Way, Sumner, Tumwater, Olympia and other areas. Several of the classes highlighted reading for pleasure in the days leading up to Read Across America Day, so receiving books was a culminating surprise for many of the students.
