WEA supports I-1501 as the means to guard against growing consumer fraud and identity theft targeting seniors and other vulnerable residents.
Many studies and reports have verified that fraudulent telemarketers prey on older people, targeting them with well over half of calls made. ARRP reports that more than half of Washington fraud victims are over 50.
The annual financial loss by victims of elder financial abuse is estimated to be at least $2.9 billion dollars, a 12% increase from the $2.6 billion estimated in 2008.
Initiative 1501 will discourage identity theft and consumer fraud against seniors and other vulnerable residents by increasing penalties and preventing the release of personal private information about vulnerable people and their in-home caregivers by the state.
