Bainbridge ESP members win major pay raises; negotiations continue elsewhere

Midstate strike training
Hundreds of WEA members are participating in strike preparation training this month.

WEA members across Washington continue to negotiate great contract settlements that include substantial pay increases for both certificated staff AND classified education support professionals. Here's the updated map of the highest pay raises.

Bainbridge Island Education Support Professionals Association negotiated an across-the-board pay raise of 18.2 percent beginning Sept. 1. That’s the highest reported raise for ESP members so far. The union represents classified education support professionals, who say the negotiated pay raise will make a huge difference in their lives. Top pay will be nearly $52 an hour, depending upon job type (BIESPA represents all ESP in the district.)

“This is something we’ve been fighting for for a long time and it’s really amazing to see it finally come through,” said Carrie Shipp, a special education paraprofessional at Ordway Elementary. “I’ll be able to breathe...When my car breaks down I can actually pay the bill and not go into debt.”

18WEA_settlement_spotlight_v1 (1)Laura Mc Donald, a special education paraprofessional at Woodward Elementary in Bainbridge, said that when she saw the settlement, “I thought, ‘I don’t have to work two other jobs after school. I might be able to make ends meet now.’ ”

Here are other local unions that recently won big pay raises for their members.

  • Brewster EA: 15.3 percent
  • McCleary EA: 13.7 percent
  • Toppenish EA: 18.3 percent
  • Moses Lake EA: 11.9%
  • Prosser EA: 13.8%
  • Pullman EA: 15.5%
  • Washtucna EA: 15.6%
  • Woodland EA: 12.6%

Mukilteo Education Association members also reached a tentative agreement on substantial pay raises this week. The settlement came after months of resistance from district administrators who initially refused to negotiate much-needed pay raises.

As The Herald newspaper posted, “Pickets, protests pay off as Mukilteo teachers get hefty hikes.”

More 200 WEA certificated and ESP locals continue to negotiate pay raises at the bargaining table. (List at the bottom of this post.)

In some school districts, administrators are making excuses, blaming a non-existent cap on pay raises or falsely claiming their districts are facing multi-million budget deficits in coming years.

While the goal is always a fair contract that WEA members can ratify with pride, educators all over Washington are preparing for potential strikes.

More than 400 WEA members are participating in regional strike preparation trainings this month. “We are getting prepared to take the action our members want us to take -- if needed,” said Frannie Guerrero, a teacher at Eisenhower High School in Yakima.

Meanwhile, educators in Seattle, Evergreen, Sumner and dozens of other school districts continue to rally and pack school board meetings. As of Aug. 16, about 165 certificated WEA locals and 55 ESP locals were still in contract talks with their respective school district administrations.
