Volunteering to make a difference in this election
WEA members have always been great at supporting pro education, pro-labor candidates. Through our political action committee, WEA-PAC, we interview and recommend candidates who stand for strong public schools. That’s how we use our union strength to make sure students’ voices are heard in Olympia and beyond.
As election day draws near, WEA members are mobilizing to help get out the vote. As educators, we’re trusted voices in our communities so when we call, voters listen. Educators across the state are phone and text banking to make sure everyone knows how to vote pro-education.
“I feel my most impactful activism right now is ensuring that as many people vote as possible,” said Summer Stoner, a 7th grade teacher and member of Bellingham Education Association. “Phone banking is a great way to encourage voters to make their voices heard. Not only am I able to encourage voting, I am also able to remind voters about the pro-education and pro-labor candidates.”
Some WEA members are doing their first phone bank for a candidate, while others are seasoned veterans. A recent phone bank for Ingrid Anderson had a wide mix of experience and an energetic group of educators.
Phone banking is easy, done from home, and each shift begins with a training. The campaigns provide a script for volunteers to read from along with some background about the candidate.
“It is an easy way for me to be an active part of the upcoming elections,” remarked Stoner.
