Spreading support in many ways
Because WEA Rep Assembly is cancelled, local president Kris Cameron reports that Wenatchee EA leaders have decided to “repurpose the funds” they were going to use at RA to purchase gift cards at 40 plus local and independently owned restaurants. They are donating the gift cards to local health care workers who are on the front lines, tirelessly working to slow the spread of COVID-19. Members donned their red “We Teach Wenatchee” t-shirts to both make the gift card purchases and when delivering them to health care workers.
“They say it takes a village,” Cameron says. “We want to do something to support the community that supports us. This is also a great way to show our students that everyone can step up and do something to keep the families in our community whole. The employees we spoke with seemed to appreciate the moral support almost more than the financial support.”
Just as the community supports levies and bonds, educators are doing everything they can to support students and their families – including those families owning small businesses who are trying to stay afloat in these uncertain times.
Cameron says Wenatchee EA leaders have been surprised, encouraged and comforted by participating and that she is pleased to see so many positive responses and “likes” on community Facebook pages.
