WEA President Kim Mead joined Washington State Governor Jay Inslee and Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson at the Federal Detention Center in SeaTac today where some 200 asylum-seekers, many who have been separated from their children, are being held without having committed a crime.

“I am here, today to represent educators in our state who work on the frontline teaching, protecting and nurturing students every day.” Mead says. “We understand that parents sometimes must flee their home countries to find a place to protect their children and themselves. We are concerned about the trauma these children and their families are experiencing.”

Ferguson announced that Washington State is filing a lawsuit, along with several other states, challenging the zero tolerance immigration policy. Ferguson says that while the administration has some discretion on how to handle our borders, what they are doing now is unconstitutional. Ferguson says the Executive Order signed by the president did not apply to the more than 2,000 children who are currently separated from their families and that the order is vague and leaves more questions than it answers.
