Nominations for WEA Human & Civil Rights Awards

Do you know an individual, organization; or group whose efforts have made a difference to communities within Washington State? Give them some well-deserved recognition by nominating them for one of the WEA Human and Civil Rights Awards.

Anyone can submit a nomination, but nominations are due by 4 p.m. Friday, March 5.

Winners receive a special Human and Civil Rights Award, a $250 check and local and statewide recognition.

The four award categories are:

Community Partners Award

Nominees will have:

  • Improved cooperative working relationships between school and community; and/or
  • Improved the total school or a significant portion of their local community; and/or
  • Demonstrated leadership in educating the community, school and home.

Elaine Akagi - Cultural Awareness Award

Nominees will have:

  • Designed and initiated programs to identify and encourage the use of multicultural teaching materials; and/or
  • Promoted human relations training within education; and/or
  • Worked beyond the call of duty to eradicate racial inequities in education.

International Peace and Understanding Award

Nominees will have:

  • Demonstrated leadership in promoting international peace and understanding by serving as a model for youth; and/or
  • Improved cooperative working relationships between people of other cultures in the world community; and/or
  • Initiated and used programs to teach international peace and understanding.

Student Involvement Award

Nominees will have:

  • Initiated programs or activities to benefit the school students or community; and/or
  • Lead by example, giving unselfishly and/or offering support; and/or
  • Developed group activities that promote well-rounded student participation.
