More than 3,000 books landed in the hands of several hundred students from Seattle and Highline schools as part of WEA’s Read Across America Literacy Concert Wednesday, March 1 at Town Hall, Seattle. Students from 14 Title One schools were invited to bring their families to an evening performance featuring theatre, music, rapping, jump roping and, of course, reading.

  • Local author Jeffrey Cheatham II read his latest book, Why is Jane So Mad?
  • One of Seattle’s top rappers, Nacho Picasso, rapped to the classic Dr. Seuss book, Green Eggs and Ham, while dancing students formed a small mosh pit near the stage.
  • Actors from Book-It Theatre performed Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Pena in English and Spanish.
  • Beat boxer Nate Bogopolsky treated students to a song inspired by Where the Wild Things Are, which was read aloud by WEA President Kim Mead, SEA President Phyllis Campano, HEA President Sue McCabe, Highline’s Madrona Elementary Principal, Kellie Hernandez and Seattle’s Martin Luther King Elementary Principal, Chris Thomas.
  • Five-time world-champion jump roper Rene Bibaud was on hand to remind people that building reading muscles is just as important as building stamina for jumping.
  • Seattle Youth Poet Laureate Angel Gardner wore pink dinosaur pajamas to emcee the evening telling students she remembers celebrating Read Across America when she was an elementary school student.

Books were donated by the National Education Association, Amazon.com (who also had volunteers at the event) and Book Haven. QFC-West Seattle donated cookies for everyone to add to the sweetness of the evening. Students and their families arrived by school bus and were greeted by the Seattle Mariner Moose and Lucha Libre Volcanica wrestlers who posed for photos with students while they waited for the show to begin. The evening event was made possible by a generous grant from the National Education Association.
