2019 Washington State Teacher of the Year Robert Hand.

We’re kicking off National Teacher Appreciation Week by spotlighting Washington State Teacher of Year Robert Hand. Hand, a high school teacher and member of Mount Vernon EA, exemplifies the many reasons we should all take time to #ThankATeacher.

Hand’s approach to teaching begins with building relationships and connection with students.

“I don’t want a day to go by where kids feel like they came into their classes and left and nobody ever saw them,” Hand says. “Nobody ever knew that they were here. Nobody ever cared that they were here or not.”

Every day, teachers across Washington put in the time and hard work to help students feel welcome and safe in school. Great and caring teachers are vital for students to succeed. This week, and every week, let a teacher know how much you appreciate all that they do. Share your stories and #ThankATeacher.

If you want to deliver a thank you in person, you can use NEA's custom card builder to create your personalized message.

And remember to Wear #RedforEd on May 8 and post your support for teachers on social media in your red.
