2018 WEA National Board Home Stretch Registration

Overview

WEA’s National Board Home Stretch event is focused on supporting National Board candidates as they are making final revisions to components just before submission. Home Stretch was first developed by Washington state NBCTs in 2006. Each year, hundreds of WEA member NBCTs serve as facilitators at Home Stretch.

WEA’s National Board Home Stretch is a one-day seminar consisting of two parts.

  • In the morning, an NBCT facilitator leads candidates through a peer reivew of either Component 2, 3, or 4 with up to four other candidates or candidates can work in a supported work group. The peer review group provides standards-based feedback on the written commentary of these components using a a protocol specially designed for use at WEA Home Stretch events.
  • In the afternoon, candidates may choose between Component 1 (Assessment Center) preparation or a similar, facilitated peer review of either Component 2, 3 or 4 or a supported work group.  Component 1 preparation entails exploring the selected response items, the constructed response exercises, and released items in a small like-certificate group of candidates. Candidates may choose to focus on the same Components (2, 3, and 4) for the morning and afternoon using different written pages of the given component in the morning and afternoon. WEA also releases its widely acclaimed WEA Component 1 Handbook – a great tool to help demystify the assessment center experience – at Home Stretch each year.

Home Stretch is:

  • An opportunity to receive feedback from peers based on evidence that is present or absent from your Written Commentary for Component 2, 3 or 4;
  • An opportunity to critically analyze other candidates’ Written Commentary using a standards based rubric;
  • The opportunity to learn about the Component 1 procedures and practice the released items from your certificate area;
  • The opportunity to network with candidates and an NBCT facilitator in your certificate area;
  • Sponsored and developed by Washington Education Association (WEA)

Home Stretch is not:

  • The place to be told what you must add or delete from your Components. This is your process. What you do with the feedback is up to YOU!
  • The opportunity to have others read your work, then go home without providing feedback to others;
  • An opportunity to learn “what questions are on the test." Facilitators and candidates will follow the NBPTS ethical support guidelines;
  • A replacement for cohort involvement.  It is a complement to the work you are doing with your group;
  • An event you should miss!

WEA is not able to accept checks, purchase orders or other forms of payment for Home Stretch.  There is no scholarship assistance available for Home Stretch. If your district or local provides financial support for the registration cost, please pay the registration fee and then submit a request for reimbursement through the district or local. Home Stretch participants are responsible for their own transportation and any lodging costs.  The non-member rate is $250 if space is available.

Registration

Given limited budgets and staffing, WEA is not able to accommodate more than 250 candidates in Spokane and 500 in Des Moines.

WEA will give priority to past WEA National Board Jump Start attendees who are WEA members to register for Home Stretch.  Any remaining seats will then be open to WEA member candidates who did not attend Jump Start.  After that, non-members will be able to secure any remaining seats.  Here is a registration timeline summary.
