Seventeen Washington schools will receive a Music and Arts Grant this year to assist in bringing artistic programs into the classroom. The grant is designed to foster creativity in choir, band, dance, film, theater, computer arts and graphics and any K-12 curriculum that employs art for learning.

Examples include:

  • $250 to fund an “art in math” program at Cascade Middle School (Longview), an incentive for students who will make and sell ceramic pieces to help fund the program in the future
  •  $500 to provide ukuleles for the Kennydale Elementary School (Renton) music and dance program, which the instructor says will instill the love of music in students that will last for the rest of their lives
  •  $500 to purchase Joia Tube instruments for the Enterprise Elementary School (Federal Way) special needs general music classroom, to aid visual learners and students with autism
  • $250 for instruments and t-shirts for the chorale program at Michael Anderson Elementary School, which serves children at Fairchild Air Force Base

“Student success is achieved when each person has access to a great, well-rounded education,” said Kim Mead, WEA President. “We appreciate the support California Casualty provides for students here in Washington State.”

California Casualty has partnered with education associations for nearly 70 years and understands the importance of music and arts education for children. Art and performance curriculum have been shown to reduce disciplinary issues and dropout rates. Unfortunately, funding for arts education has been eliminated or decreased at many schools.

“We want to help students excel through music, dance, fine art and other creative outlets,” said Brian Goodman, Assistant Vice President at California Casualty.
