American Education Week begins today and this year we’re joining the #PublicSchoolsForAll campaign. We’ll be highlighting how public schools welcome students of all backgrounds and abilities and how WEA members work to help keep it that way.

You can join in by sharing a picture that represents your pride in public schools on social media with #PublicSchoolsForAll.

The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the NEA and American Legion as the cosponsors, and came in response to high illiteracy rates. The NEA’s original resolution called for: "An educational week ... observed in all communities annually for the purpose of informing the public of the accomplishments and needs of the public schools and to secure the cooperation and support of the public in meeting those needs."

The spirit of this resolution lives on, as celebrating and supporting public education remains vital to this day.
