Densho: The Japanese American Legacy Project is seeking 55 secondary teachers to participate in a demonstration project. This project will focus on how to teach historical content about the World War II incarceration of Japanese Americans through the analysis of primary source materials. This project will feature primary sources from the Densho archive, Rethinking Routines from Harvard’s Visible Thinking Project, videos that demonstrate what this looks like in the classroom, and short documentaries that integrate primary source materials. Feedback from participating teachers will help to refine the online course prior to distribution to teachers in Washington State and across the country.

Selected teachers are expected to complete the following by June 10, 2016:

  1. Complete a self-paced, online course (5-6 hours).
  2. Try something from the course in the classroom and document the experience with student work.
  3. Evaluate the online course through an online survey, including writing a reflective summary of the classroom practice.

Teachers who complete all three parts of the demonstration project will receive:

  • $200 honorarium
  • 5 clock hours through the Puget Sound Educational Service District
  • Assorted teaching materials

Interested teachers should complete an online application http://bit.ly/DenshoRegistration by March 23, 2016. Densho will notify selected participants by Friday, March 25, 2016. Selected teachers may work on this demonstration project from March 25, 2016 through June 10, 2016.

Funding for this demonstration project is provided by a grant from the Kip Tokuda Memorial Washington Civil Liberties Public Education Project, through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Densho is a Seattle-based non-profit that encourages the examination of democracy, intolerance, wartime hysteria, civil rights and the responsibilities of citizenship in our increasingly global society.
