It’s time to vote!

The Aug. 7 primary election is soon, and ballots have arrived in voters’ mailboxes.

This year, there’s no excuse not to return your ballot – postage is pre-paid.

WEA-PAC has recommended nearly 100 pro-public education, pro-union candidates for state Legislature, state Supreme Court and local offices. Our new personalized digital voter guide is just for WEA members. It’s easy to use. Just type in your address, and it will pull up a list of the recommended candidates.

For WEA members and our students, there’s a lot at stake this year. Maintaining a pro-public education, pro-union majority in the state House of Representatives and the state Senate is crucial. Just a couple of seats could dramatically change the Legislature and give the majority to legislators who oppose workers’ freedom to negotiate fair contracts and who oppose fully funding our schools.

After our huge McCleary school funding victory, we need to keep the momentum and work with the Legislature to fund smaller class sizes and additional support staff.

The primary election determines the two candidates who will appear on the Nov. 6 general election ballot. Unlike in most states, in Washington the top two vote-getters move to the general election, even if they’re from the same party.
