WEA statement on National Teacher of the Year Mandy Manning of Spokane

Washington Education Association member Mandy Manning has been named the National Teacher of the Year. Here is a statement from WEA President Kim Mead:

“We are so proud to have Mandy Manning as the National Teacher of the Year. Her work welcoming immigrant students is a fundamental building block to their process of becoming US citizens. She does her work with heart, mind and humor. Mandy understands as a leader, being part of a strong union helps her students succeed. As a teacher, I couldn’t be more excited to have her represent us.
“Mandy embodies great teaching, dedication, union activism and, most of all, compassion for every student and everyone who is lucky enough to spend time with her.
“In addition to her work in the classroom and as a coach, Mandy is involved in her union. She started as a building rep and is currently on the executive committee of the Spokane Education Association.
“Congratulations, Mandy!”
