Candidates are standing up for education in the 10th Legislative District
We have fantastic pro-labor, pro-education candidates in the 10th Legislative District, which includes Whidbey Island, Stanwood, and Mt. Vernon. The primaries for these candidates were close so we know educators’ votes will be critical to helping these candidates win in November. Make sure you mark your ballot for these candidates who stand with us. In Whatcom and Snohomish Counties, Ballots are being mailed to households October 14-15 and are due Tuesday, November 3.
Helen Price Johnson
Helen Price Johnson was twice elected to the South Whidbey School Board and has long been active in her children’s public school PTAs. She is a supporter of community colleges and apprenticeships and believes that all districts should receive the funding necessary to provide free early childhood education.
Price Johnson agrees with us that we need to eliminate standardized testing and she opposes voucher schemes that would direct money away from our public schools. Her two children attended public schools and she understands the need to increase funding to meet students’ mental health needs.
Angie Homola
Homola was an Island County Commissioner and is a union member who stood up for union benefits and against cuts during the great recession. She raised two children in our public schools system. She wants to expand access to public education from pre-K to junior colleges, including vocational schooling and childcare for low income working or student parents.
Homola believes in smaller class sizes and supports fully funding and implementing I-1351. She opposes sending public dollars to private and charter schools. She also stands with us for fixing our upside-down and regressive tax structure, backing the passage of fair taxation and progressive revenue for our state.
Dave Paul
Paul has been a champion for us in Olympia. He sponsored legislation to better support paraeducators, and he will continue to fight for fully funding public schools and special education programs. As Vice Chair of the House Education Committee, Paul helped ensure the Legislature removed high-stakes testing as a requirement for high school graduation (House Bill 1599).
Public education is a priority for Paul, who works with students throughout Skagit and Island counties on a daily basis to further their education and find jobs that pay living wages. He has served the community for 12 years working at Skagit Valley College.
